USD/JPY signals: trading the yen between the BoJ and 160

In 2026 USD/JPY has not been an ordinary trending pair. Japan's Ministry of Finance has bought yen in the market, the US joined Japan in a joint intervention in July, and the Bank of Japan has lifted rates to their highest level in decades. Anyone paying for or following USD/JPY signals this year needs to know how those forces change what a trade setup should look like.

This guide looks at the yen's year so far, the levels and dates that matter in the coming week, how volatility has changed month by month, and how to judge whether a USD/JPY signal is built for these conditions. You can follow our yen notes for free on the Forexuro Telegram channel.

Why USD/JPY signals need a different approach this year

Most of the time, USD/JPY follows the gap between US and Japanese interest rates. When that gap is wide, the carry trade supports the dollar and the pair drifts higher. In 2026 a second force has been just as important: the Japanese authorities' willingness to step in when the yen weakens too far.

That creates a market with an invisible ceiling. Price can grind higher for weeks on rate differentials and then drop several yen in a session when Tokyo acts. A signal that ignores this, for example a long position with a distant target just under 160, is taking a risk that has nothing to do with the chart. The USD/JPY signals page explains how our standard ticket is structured; this guide focuses on the conditions around it.

The yen's year in one chart

The chart below shows daily USD/JPY closes for 2026, with the 160 level marked and the period of reported yen buying shaded.

Line chart of USD/JPY daily closes in 2026, mostly between 152 and 160 until a climb above 160 in June and July to a peak near 163.9, followed by a sharp drop at the end of July, a fall to the low 150s in September and a close near 156.8 on 23 October; the period from 28 April to 27 May is shaded

According to Investing.com, the Ministry of Finance bought ¥11.74 trillion of yen between 28 April and 27 May. On Yahoo Finance data, the pair fell from about 160.2 on 29 April to about 157.0 the next day. The pair later climbed above 160 again and reached about 163.9 in late July, before what The Business Times described as a joint US and Japan intervention. It closed at about 160.2 on 30 July and near 157.6 a few sessions later.

Where the pair stands now

USD/JPY ended Friday 23 October at about 156.81 on Yahoo Finance data, having touched about 156.07 during the week, its lowest level of October. It had been near 158.5 on 19 October. The Business Times reported that the pair reached about 159.05 after US inflation data earlier in the month and then slipped back towards 158.

That pullback came with a warning. Finance Minister Katayama said on 15 October that Japan was ready to act again and that the US and Japanese position on currencies had not changed since the joint action in July, The Business Times reported. When a finance minister reminds the market of a previous intervention, it is telling traders where patience runs out. Our USD/JPY forecast for the week of 26 October sets out the levels for the week ahead.

The Bank of Japan decision on 30 October

The Bank of Japan announces its next decision on Friday 30 October. Nikkei Asia reported on 22 October that the bank is expected to hold its policy rate at 1.25%. That level was reached with the September hike, which took rates to a 31 year high, with two board members dissenting.

A Bloomberg survey reported by investingLive found that 83% of economists expect the next hike in December and none expect a move in October. The bank may also raise its inflation forecast for next year, according to sources cited by CNA and Reuters on 20 October. So the main risk on the day is not the rate decision itself but the tone: any hint that December is firmly on the table could strengthen the yen, while a cautious message could let the dollar recover. Our BoJ rate decision explainer covers how the announcement and the press conference work.

How volatile USD/JPY has been in 2026

Volatility matters for signals because it sets how wide stops must be and how realistic targets are. We measured the average daily high to low range for each month of 2026.

Bar chart of USD/JPY average daily range by month in 2026, in pips: January 104, February 114, March 93, April 93, May 62, June 41, July 93, August 82, September 136, October to date 80
USD/JPY average daily high to low range by month, in pips. Calculated by Forexuro from Yahoo Finance daily bars (USDJPY=X), October to 23 October.

The range swung from about 41 pips a day in June, when the pair crept above 160 with little resistance, to about 136 pips a day in September, the month of the rate hike. October so far is about 80 pips. A stop that suited June would have been hit by ordinary noise in September. That is why a fixed pip stop on USD/JPY makes little sense this year, and why signals should state the stop for each trade rather than use a template.

Pip value and sizing for UK traders

On USD/JPY one pip is 0.01. A standard lot of 100,000 dollars is worth 1,000 yen per pip, which at a rate near 156.8 is about $6.38. For a trader with a sterling account and GBP/USD near 1.337, that works out at roughly £4.77 per pip per standard lot.

So a 40 pip stop on one standard lot risks about £191, and the same stop on a 0.2 lot risks about £38. Those numbers move as the exchange rates move, so use the USD/JPY pip value calculator or the position size calculator before each trade rather than memorising a figure.

What a good USD/JPY signal should show

  • A clear entry price or zone in the yen convention, such as 156.40.
  • A stop loss placed where the idea is wrong, not a round number chosen for comfort.
  • Targets that respect obvious levels, including the areas where the authorities have acted before.
  • A note when a major event is close, such as a BoJ decision, US CPI or a Fed meeting.
  • Management updates when a trade should move to breakeven or be closed early.
  • A public record of past results, losses included.

Every Forexuro signal comes with an entry, a stop loss and three targets, with updates posted on Telegram, and our results are on the public results page.

Trading near the intervention zone

The area around 160 deserves special care. Pushes above it this year have ended in sharp reversals, first in late April and again at the end of July. That does not mean the authorities will act at any exact level, and they have not published one. It does mean that longs close to that area carry a risk of a sudden gap lower that no stop can fully control.

Practical responses include smaller positions when the pair is close to that zone, taking profits earlier on long trades, and avoiding holding new longs through weekends when official comments are likely. Short setups near the zone carry their own risk: if the authorities stay quiet, the rate gap can push the pair higher for longer than expected. The slippage, gaps and weekend risk lesson explains why gaps can skip past a stop.

Yen signals around the BoJ, the Fed and US data

The coming week compresses several yen events into a few days. The Fed decides on Wednesday 28 October, US GDP and PCE inflation follow on Thursday 29 October, and the BoJ closes the week on Friday 30 October. Each can move the pair on its own, and together they can produce swings in both directions.

A cautious approach is to avoid opening new positions just before each release, to check whether open trades should be reduced, and to wait for the first reaction to settle before acting. The market sessions tool helps you track the times, and our USD/JPY page lists the events that usually move the yen.

A checklist before taking a USD/JPY signal

  • Check how far the pair is from 160 and whether officials have spoken recently.
  • Look up the next BoJ, Fed and US inflation dates before you enter.
  • Compare the stop distance with the current average daily range.
  • Work out the cash risk in pounds with a calculator, not a guess.
  • Decide whether you will hold the trade through the weekend.
  • Keep the total risk across all yen positions within your limit, including GBP/JPY or EUR/JPY.

Who USD/JPY signals suit

Signals on this pair suit traders who can follow updates during the London and New York sessions, accept that some trades will be closed early when official comments land, and size positions from the stop distance rather than a fixed lot. They suit less well anyone looking for a set and forget trade, because this year the pair has punished positions left alone through major events.

The Forexuro team has more than 10 years of trading experience, and the main lesson from 2026 is simple: on USD/JPY, the event calendar and the official comments matter as much as the chart.
