What it is

The Bank of Japan's Policy Board sets the short term policy interest rate and decides on its bond purchase plans. After years of negative rates and yield curve control, the BoJ has been raising rates gradually, so every meeting is watched for the pace of further moves. It is published by the Policy Board of the Bank of Japan (BoJ).

What to watch in the release

  • Policy rate. The uncollateralised overnight call rate target.
  • Statement and vote. Dissents can hint at the direction of travel.
  • Outlook Report. Quarterly forecasts, published in January, April, July and October.
  • Governor's press conference. Held on the afternoon of the decision in Tokyo.

When it is released

There are eight two day meetings a year. The decision has no fixed release time; it usually comes around midday Tokyo time, which is the early morning in Europe. Use the market sessions clock to convert times, and read market sessions and the economic calendar.

Why it moves markets

The gap between Japanese and US yields is a key driver of USD/JPY, and the yen is a funding currency for carry trades. A more hawkish BoJ can lift the yen across the board. As of 23 October 2026 the policy rate is about 1.25%, with the next meeting ending on 30 October; see the central banks page for sources. See the Bank of Japan on our central banks page.

Which pairs and gold it moves

  • USD/JPY: The main pair for BoJ news.
  • XAU/USD: Gold can react to sharp moves in the yen and global yields.
  • AUD/USD: Yen moves can spill into risk currencies through carry trades.

How much any market moves depends on the size of the surprise and on what else is happening; there is no fixed reaction. Gold and the dollar pairs often react most when a release changes expectations for interest rates.

Bank of Japan rate decision in context

The Bank of Japan's Policy Board holds eight two day monetary policy meetings a year. Unlike most major central banks, it has no fixed release time: the statement is published when the meeting ends, usually around the Tokyo lunchtime, and the Governor's press conference follows in the afternoon. That uncertainty about timing is a risk in itself for anyone holding yen positions through the meeting.

For years the bank ran some of the loosest policy in the world, with negative interest rates and controls on government bond yields. It ended negative rates in 2024, so each meeting is now judged on the pace of further normalisation. Four times a year, in January, April, July and October, the bank also publishes its Outlook Report with updated forecasts.

The decision lands during the Asian session, when liquidity in USD/JPY is lower than in London or New York, so moves can be abrupt. Currency intervention is a separate matter: Japan's Ministry of Finance decides on it and the Bank carries it out. Gold can react through the yen and through moves in global bond yields.

How to trade around it carefully

  1. Check the exact release time on an economic calendar and convert it to your time zone. Clocks change in the UK on 25 October 2026 and in the US on 1 November 2026, so the gap between London and New York is temporarily one hour.
  2. Know the consensus forecast and the previous figure, including any revisions. Markets react to the surprise, not the number itself.
  3. Decide in advance whether you will be flat, hold with reduced size or wait for the first move to settle. Many traders avoid opening new positions in the minutes before a top tier release.
  4. Expect wider spreads and possible slippage. Stops can be filled worse than their level when liquidity thins; see slippage.
  5. Size down. If you hold through the release, a smaller position from the position size calculator keeps the money at risk within your plan.
  6. Let the dust settle. The first spike often reverses as the details are digested; waiting for a retest of a level can be calmer than chasing the first candle.
