What it is

The Bank of England's nine member Monetary Policy Committee sets Bank Rate. The announcement shows how each member voted, and four times a year it comes with the Monetary Policy Report, which contains the Bank's forecasts. It is published by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of England.

What to watch in the release

  • Bank Rate. The UK policy rate.
  • Vote split. How many members voted to hold, raise or cut; splits can signal the next move.
  • Minutes and Monetary Policy Report. The reasoning and the forecasts, with the report in February, May, August and November.

When it is released

There are eight scheduled decisions a year, announced at 12:00 UK time. Use the market sessions clock to convert times, and read market sessions and the economic calendar.

Why it moves markets

The decision and vote split drive expectations for UK rates and so the pound. As of 23 October 2026 Bank Rate is 3.75% after a 6 to 3 vote in September, with three members voting for an increase, and the next decision is on 5 November; see the central banks page for sources. See the Bank of England on our central banks page.

Which pairs and gold it moves

  • GBP/USD: The main pair for Bank of England news.
  • EUR/GBP: Reflects Bank of England policy relative to the ECB.
  • XAU/USD: Little direct effect, except through the dollar and global yields.

How much any market moves depends on the size of the surprise and on what else is happening; there is no fixed reaction. Gold and the dollar pairs often react most when a release changes expectations for interest rates.

Bank of England rate decision in context

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee has nine members and sets Bank Rate at eight scheduled meetings a year. Decisions are announced at 12:00pm UK time, together with the minutes and the vote of each member, so markets learn immediately how divided the committee is. A split vote, or a member voting for a larger move than expected, can shift sterling as much as the decision itself.

Four times a year, in February, May, August and November, the decision comes with the Monetary Policy Report, which includes the Bank's forecasts for inflation and growth. Those meetings usually carry more weight, especially for traders comparing the Bank's inflation path with the latest UK CPI and wage data.

Midday UK time sits in the middle of the London session, before New York opens, so the first reaction happens in European liquidity. GBP/USD reflects both the decision and the dollar's mood that day, while EUR/GBP gives a cleaner view of how the market judged the Bank against the ECB. Gilt yields often move at the same moment and are worth watching alongside sterling.

How to trade around it carefully

  1. Check the exact release time on an economic calendar and convert it to your time zone. Clocks change in the UK on 25 October 2026 and in the US on 1 November 2026, so the gap between London and New York is temporarily one hour.
  2. Know the consensus forecast and the previous figure, including any revisions. Markets react to the surprise, not the number itself.
  3. Decide in advance whether you will be flat, hold with reduced size or wait for the first move to settle. Many traders avoid opening new positions in the minutes before a top tier release.
  4. Expect wider spreads and possible slippage. Stops can be filled worse than their level when liquidity thins; see slippage.
  5. Size down. If you hold through the release, a smaller position from the position size calculator keeps the money at risk within your plan.
  6. Let the dust settle. The first spike often reverses as the details are digested; waiting for a retest of a level can be calmer than chasing the first candle.
