Overview

EUR/GBP prices one euro in British pounds. It is a cross pair with no US dollar, so it isolates the relative outlook for the euro area and the UK. Because the two economies are closely linked, the pair often moves in narrower ranges than the dollar majors, with bursts of activity around ECB and Bank of England news.

How the quote works

A quote of 0.8370 means one euro buys 0.8370 pounds. One pip is 0.0001, worth 10 pounds on a standard lot of 100,000 euros, which makes it simple to size for UK accounts. New to quotes? Read how to read a forex quote and the glossary entries for pip and lot.

When it trades

EUR/GBP is a European session pair. Most of its activity comes between the London open and the late European afternoon, around euro area and UK data releases and the two central banks' decisions.

What moves EUR/GBP

  • ECB versus Bank of England. The relative path of euro area and UK interest rates is the core driver.
  • Inflation and growth data. UK CPI and euro area HICP, plus PMIs from both sides.
  • Political and fiscal news. UK budgets and euro area fiscal stress, such as worries about French debt, can move the pair.
  • Trade relations. UK and EU trade arrangements remain relevant for longer term moves.

Volatility explained

EUR/GBP is often quieter than GBP/USD or EUR/USD because two closely linked currencies are being compared, but it can move sharply when the ECB and Bank of England surprise in opposite directions. Use current ATR to size stops.

Forexuro does not publish a fixed "average daily range" for EUR/GBP here, because any such number goes out of date quickly and depends on the period chosen. Measure it on your own platform over the window you trade.

Pip value and position size

Use the EUR/GBP pip value calculator to see what one pip is worth in your account currency, then the position size calculator to turn your risk and stop into lots. Keeping risk per trade small, often 1% or less, is the main protection against a run of losses; see risk management for traders.
