The ECB sets three key interest rates for the euro area: the deposit facility rate, the main refinancing operations rate and the marginal lending facility rate. The deposit facility rate is the one markets watch most closely as it steers short term rates. Each decision comes with a statement and a press conference by the President. It is published by the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB).
What to watch in the release
- Deposit facility rate. The main policy signal.
- Statement and press conference. Guidance on the outlook and data dependence.
- Staff projections. Updated growth and inflation forecasts four times a year, in March, June, September and December.
When it is released
Monetary policy meetings are held about every six weeks, eight times a year. The decision is published at 14:15 Central European Time and the press conference starts at 14:45. Use the market sessions clock to convert times, and read market sessions and the economic calendar.
Why it moves markets
ECB policy relative to the Fed is a key driver of EUR/USD, and relative to the Bank of England of EUR/GBP. As of 23 October 2026 the deposit facility rate is 2.50%, and the next decision is on 29 October; see the central banks page for sources. See the European Central Bank on our central banks page.
Which pairs and gold it moves
- EUR/USD: The main pair for ECB news.
- EUR/GBP: Reflects ECB policy relative to the Bank of England.
- XAU/USD: Gold reacts mostly through the dollar's move.
How much any market moves depends on the size of the surprise and on what else is happening; there is no fixed reaction. Gold and the dollar pairs often react most when a release changes expectations for interest rates.
ECB rate decision in context
The European Central Bank's Governing Council sets monetary policy for all the countries that use the euro, usually at eight meetings a year about six weeks apart. Since 2024 the ECB has said it steers policy through the deposit facility rate, so that is the rate most commentary now focuses on, although the bank still announces its main refinancing and marginal lending rates as well.
The decision is published at 2:15pm Frankfurt time and the President's press conference begins at 2:45pm, during the overlap of the European and US sessions. Four times a year, in March, June, September and December, the announcement comes with new staff projections for growth and inflation, which often matter more than the decision itself because they show where the bank expects inflation to be in two or three years.
Because the ECB sets one rate for very different economies, traders also watch government bond spreads, especially between Italy and Germany, for signs of stress. EUR/USD reacts to the gap between ECB and Fed expectations, while EUR/GBP shows how the euro moves against another European currency on the same news.
How to trade around it carefully
- Check the exact release time on an economic calendar and convert it to your time zone. Clocks change in the UK on 25 October 2026 and in the US on 1 November 2026, so the gap between London and New York is temporarily one hour.
- Know the consensus forecast and the previous figure, including any revisions. Markets react to the surprise, not the number itself.
- Decide in advance whether you will be flat, hold with reduced size or wait for the first move to settle. Many traders avoid opening new positions in the minutes before a top tier release.
- Expect wider spreads and possible slippage. Stops can be filled worse than their level when liquidity thins; see slippage.
- Size down. If you hold through the release, a smaller position from the position size calculator keeps the money at risk within your plan.
- Let the dust settle. The first spike often reverses as the details are digested; waiting for a retest of a level can be calmer than chasing the first candle.
