What it is

The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index measures prices of goods and services bought by or for US households. It is released in the Personal Income and Outlays report, and the Fed's 2% inflation objective is defined in terms of PCE. Core PCE excludes food and energy. It is published by the US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

What to watch in the release

  • Headline PCE. All items.
  • Core PCE. Excludes food and energy; the Fed watches it closely.
  • Income and spending. Released in the same report.

When it is released

It is usually published towards the end of the month at 8:30am New York time, covering the previous month. Because it follows CPI, part of the surprise is often anticipated. As of late October 2026, September PCE is scheduled alongside the Q3 GDP advance estimate on 29 October. Use the market sessions clock to convert times, and read market sessions and the economic calendar.

Why it moves markets

As the Fed's target measure, PCE shapes expectations for US rates. It can move the dollar and gold, especially when CPI has left the picture uncertain. See the Federal Reserve on our central banks page.

Which pairs and gold it moves

How much any market moves depends on the size of the surprise and on what else is happening; there is no fixed reaction. Gold and the dollar pairs often react most when a release changes expectations for interest rates.

US PCE inflation in context

The personal consumption expenditures price index is published by the US Bureau of Economic Analysis as part of the monthly Personal Income and Outlays report, usually near the end of the month at 8:30am New York time. The Federal Reserve has defined its 2% inflation target in terms of PCE since 2012, and policymakers often cite the core measure, which excludes food and energy, as their best guide to the underlying trend.

PCE covers a wider range of spending than CPI, including spending made on behalf of households such as employer provided health insurance, and its weights change more quickly as consumers switch between goods. Those differences are why it has tended to run a little below CPI.

For traders, PCE is often less of a shock than CPI, because economists can estimate much of it in advance from the CPI and producer price data released earlier in the month. The surprise, when it comes, is therefore often small. The same report also includes personal income and spending, which can matter for the dollar and gold when inflation is close to expectations. Reactions are usually seen first in Treasury yields, then in USD/JPY and gold.

How to trade around it carefully

  1. Check the exact release time on an economic calendar and convert it to your time zone. Clocks change in the UK on 25 October 2026 and in the US on 1 November 2026, so the gap between London and New York is temporarily one hour.
  2. Know the consensus forecast and the previous figure, including any revisions. Markets react to the surprise, not the number itself.
  3. Decide in advance whether you will be flat, hold with reduced size or wait for the first move to settle. Many traders avoid opening new positions in the minutes before a top tier release.
  4. Expect wider spreads and possible slippage. Stops can be filled worse than their level when liquidity thins; see slippage.
  5. Size down. If you hold through the release, a smaller position from the position size calculator keeps the money at risk within your plan.
  6. Let the dust settle. The first spike often reverses as the details are digested; waiting for a retest of a level can be calmer than chasing the first candle.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Fed prefer PCE?

It covers a broader range of spending and adjusts as consumers switch between goods.

Is PCE usually lower than CPI?

Historically PCE has often run below CPI because of differences in weights and method.

When is PCE released?

Usually near the end of the month at 8:30am New York time.

Does PCE move markets as much as CPI?

Often less, because CPI comes first, but it can still move the dollar and gold.
