Pip: A pip is the standard unit for measuring a price move in a currency pair: 0.0001 on most pairs and 0.01 on yen pairs.

What a pip means

A pip, short for percentage in point, is the unit forex traders use to talk about price movement, spreads, stop distances and results. On most currency pairs it is the fourth decimal place, 0.0001. When EUR/USD moves from 1.1200 to 1.1201 it has moved one pip. Pairs that include the Japanese yen are quoted with two decimals, so a pip on USD/JPY is 0.01.

Because brokers now quote an extra digit, you will usually see five decimals on most pairs and three on yen pairs. That last digit is a pipette, one tenth of a pip.

Why pips matter

Pips turn price moves into a common language. A signal that says the stop is 25 pips away and the first target 40 pips away tells you the distance regardless of the price level. To turn pips into money you need the pip value, which depends on your lot size and the quote currency of the pair.

Gold is not a currency pair, and brokers use different pip conventions for XAU/USD. On the Forexuro results board a gold pip is 0.10 dollars, so a 1 dollar move is 10 pips. Always check the convention your broker uses.

Worked example

You buy EUR/USD at 1.12150 and sell at 1.12450. The move is 0.00300, which is 30 pips. On one standard lot of 100,000 euros, a pip is worth 10 dollars, so the result is about 300 dollars before costs. On USD/JPY, a move from 156.20 to 156.65 is 45 pips.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing pips with pipettes or platform points, so a 20 pip stop becomes a 2 pip stop.
  • Assuming one pip is worth the same amount on every pair.
  • Using forex pip rules on gold without checking the broker's contract.

If you follow trade signals, for example the gold signals or EUR/USD signals, understanding this term helps you size and manage each trade yourself. The free Forexuro Telegram channel shares daily market updates where these ideas are used in practice.

Frequently asked questions

How many pips is 1.1000 to 1.1050?

On a pair quoted to four decimals that is 50 pips, because each 0.0001 is one pip.

Is a pip the same on USD/JPY?

No. Yen pairs use two decimals, so one pip on USD/JPY is 0.01.
