Scalpers aim for many small gains, often a few pips each, holding for seconds to minutes. Swing traders aim for fewer, larger moves over days. The two styles sit at opposite ends of the time scale and have very different cost and skill demands.
Side by side
| Scalping | Swing trading | |
|---|---|---|
| Holding time | Seconds to minutes | Days to weeks |
| Target per trade | Small, often a few pips | Larger, often a multiple of the stop |
| Sensitivity to costs | Very high; spread and commission take a large share | Lower relative to target |
| Execution | Speed and fills are critical | Less critical |
| Number of trades | Many per day | A few per week or month |
Costs decide scalping
When a target is only a few pips, a spread of even one pip is a large share of the gain. Scalping usually needs very low costs, fast execution and a broker that allows the style. See spread and slippage.
Expectancy
Both styles live or die by expectancy: win rate times average win minus loss rate times average loss, after costs. Scalpers often run a high win rate with small wins; swing traders often accept a lower win rate for larger wins. Test your numbers with the expectancy calculator.
Gold and scalping
Gold's large intraday ranges attract scalpers, but spreads can widen sharply around news. Size carefully with the gold position size calculator.
