Base currency: The base currency is the first currency in a pair; the price shows how much of the quote currency one unit of it costs.
Base currency in practice
In USD/JPY the base is the US dollar and the price shows how many yen one dollar buys. Lot sizes are measured in the base currency, so one standard lot of USD/JPY is 100,000 dollars and one lot of EUR/USD is 100,000 euros. This matters for margin, which is calculated on the base currency value.
Market conventions
Convention decides which currency goes first. The euro is base against everything, then the pound, the Australian and New Zealand dollars, then the US dollar. That is why the market quotes EUR/GBP and GBP/USD but USD/CAD and USD/JPY.
Worked example
Buying 0.10 lots of AUD/USD means buying 10,000 Australian dollars. At 0.7017 the position is worth 7,017 US dollars.
Common mistakes
- Calculating margin on the quote currency.
- Assuming the dollar is always the base.
