Leverage: Leverage lets you control a position larger than your deposit, which magnifies both profits and losses.
How leverage works
Leverage is expressed as a ratio such as 30:1. At 30:1 you need 1/30 of a position's value, about 3.33%, as margin. One standard lot of EUR/USD at 1.12 is worth 112,000 dollars, so at 30:1 the margin is roughly 3,733 dollars.
Leverage does not change how much a pip is worth. It only changes how much of your money is tied up. The risk on a trade still comes from lot size × stop distance.
Retail limits in the UK and EU
For retail clients, the UK Financial Conduct Authority and EU regulators cap leverage on CFDs: 30:1 on major currency pairs, 20:1 on non-major pairs, gold and major indices, and lower on other assets. Brokers must also close positions when your margin falls to 50% of the required level. Professional accounts and brokers outside these rules can offer more, which also means more risk.
Why high leverage is dangerous
With high leverage a small account can open a large position, and a modest move against it can wipe out a big share of the balance. Use leverage as a ceiling, not a target, and size positions from your risk per trade.
Worked example
Two traders each have £2,000. One opens 0.10 lots on EUR/USD with a 30 pip stop and risks about £22. The other uses the full available leverage to open several lots; the same 30 pip move costs hundreds of pounds and can trigger a margin call.
Common mistakes
- Treating maximum leverage as the right position size.
- Thinking lower leverage reduces risk when the lot size stays the same.
