Definition

Risk of ruin: Risk of ruin is the probability that a run of losses will shrink an account to a level where you cannot continue trading.

What drives it

Risk of ruin depends on three things: your edge (win rate and payoff), how much you risk per trade, and what you define as ruin, such as a 50% fall. Even a method with a positive expectancy can be ruined if size is too large, because losing streaks are normal.

A simple illustration

For a 1:1 payoff with fixed bets, a classic formula is ((1 − edge) ÷ (1 + edge)) raised to the number of bets your capital covers, where edge = win rate − loss rate. With a 55% win rate the edge is 0.10. If your ruin budget covers 20 losing bets, the risk is about 1.8%. If it only covers 10, it rises to about 13.4%. Halving size made ruin about seven times less likely.

Worked example

The risk of ruin calculator runs thousands of simulated trade sequences using your win rate, reward to risk and risk per trade, and counts how often the account hits your ruin level.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a positive edge makes ruin impossible.
  • Raising risk per trade after a winning run.

If you follow trade signals, for example the gold signals or EUR/USD signals, understanding this term helps you size and manage each trade yourself. The free Forexuro Telegram channel shares daily market updates where these ideas are used in practice.
