USD/CAD pip value calculator

What one pip on USD/CAD is worth for your lot size, in USD, GBP or EUR, with the pair's pip size, contract specification and what moves it.

USD/CAD pip size and contract specification

USD/CAD is the price of one US dollar in Canadian dollars. The pair is often nicknamed "loonie", after the loon on Canada's one dollar coin. Canada is a large oil exporter, so crude prices often feed into the Canadian dollar.

USD/CAD pip value by lot size

The pip value in the quote currency is fixed: pip size × units traded. One standard lot of 100,000 USD × 0.0001 = 10 CAD per pip. Because the dollar is the base currency, a USD account converts 10 CAD into dollars at the current price: 10 ÷ 1.4008 = $7.14 per standard lot at the reference price of 1.4008. The value moves as the rate moves.

Worked example

A buy on USD/CAD at 1.4008 that closes at 1.4058 has moved 50 pips. On 0.10 lots that is 50 × 1.00 CAD = 50.00 CAD, or about $35.69 for a USD account at the reference rate.

What moves USD/CAD

The pair reflects policy at the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of Canada. Drivers that often move it include oil prices and Canadian and US jobs data, which are often released at the same time. Activity is usually highest during the New York session; see the market hours clock for the times in your zone.

USD/CAD pip value in pounds

A USD/CAD pip is worth 10 Canadian dollars per standard lot. A sterling account converts them at GBP/CAD, which is GBP/USD multiplied by USD/CAD. At the reference rates, 1.3394 × 1.4008 is about 1.8762, so a pip is worth 10 ÷ 1.8762, about £5.33 per standard lot. That is one of the lowest pound values among the majors, so the same pound risk allows a larger position than on EUR/USD.

Sizing a USD/CAD trade

Example only. The figures below are illustrative, use the reference rates dated 22 October 2026 and are not a trade or a result.

Risking £100 with a 45 pip stop: 45 × £5.33 = £239.85 per lot, so £100 ÷ £239.85 = 0.41 lots after rounding down, about £98.34 at risk. A larger lot size also means more margin and a larger overnight swap, so check both with the margin calculator and the swap calculator.

Canadian and US releases in UK time

Canada's monthly jobs report from Statistics Canada is often published on the same morning, and at the same time, as US non-farm payrolls, at 8:30 New York time. That is 13:30 UK time for most of the year, but 12:30 for a week or so in March and again from late October to early November, because the UK and the US change their clocks on different dates. The Bank of Canada rate decision is announced at 9:45 New York time, so the same shift applies. Our market hours clock shows the current gap.

Crude oil matters too, because oil is one of Canada's main exports. The USD/CAD guide and the USD/CAD weekly forecast cover the pair's drivers, and the trade history and verify page show every closed Forexuro trade.
