GBP/USD signals for the UK Budget and Fed week
Wednesday 28 October brings the UK Autumn Budget and the Federal Reserve decision on the same day, which makes this an unusual week for GBP/USD. Sterling has to absorb a fiscal statement in the London session and a US rate decision later the same day, before US GDP and inflation data on Thursday. For anyone following GBP/USD signals, it is a week to check each trade idea against the calendar before acting on it.
This guide sets out where cable stands after its October rebound, what is expected from the Budget and the Fed, how far the pair has moved in a typical day this year and how to size and manage trades in pounds. Our levels are shared free on the Forexuro Telegram channel.

Why GBP/USD has two big events on one day
Fiscal events rarely shift currencies on their own, because the headline tax and spending measures leak out in the weeks before. What can surprise is the arithmetic underneath: how much margin the Treasury keeps against its own borrowing rules, how many extra gilts must be sold and whether any revenue raiser was not trailed. This time the Chancellor's statement and the US rate announcement share a Wednesday, so sterling gets a domestic shock and a foreign one in a single session.
Thursday then adds the first reading of American third quarter output and September's PCE price gauge, with the ECB also announcing that day. If you have not used our tickets before, the GBP/USD signals page walks through the layout; here the focus is the backdrop.
GBP/USD in 2026 so far
The chart below shows GBP/USD daily closes from January to Friday 23 October, with the year's high and low marked.

Sterling began the year around 1.3475 against the dollar and peaked at roughly 1.3847 on 29 January. Through the autumn it slid with the euro, hitting its weakest level of 2026, about 1.3139, on 13 October. The recovery since has been sharper than the single currency's: the close climbed from roughly 1.3210 on 12 October to about 1.3404 ten days later, then slipped back to around 1.3375 by the end of last week.
British data helped drive that bounce, and that raises the bar for the Chancellor. When good news is already in the price, a disappointing statement can hit the pound harder than usual.
What is expected from the UK Budget
Newsquawk described the Budget as one Chancellor Healey and Prime Minister Burnham hope will be boring. A rise in capital gains tax appears to be off the table. The focus is likely to be on the headroom against the fiscal rules, which Newsquawk said is expected to fall to around £15bn from £23.6bn, and on a possible bank tax worth between £2bn and £5bn.
For the gilt market, and therefore for sterling, the borrowing plan matters. The Debt Management Office's issuance remit is expected to rise by just over £3bn. A larger than expected increase in borrowing would usually weigh on gilts and could spill into the pound; a quiet, well trailed statement would leave the focus on the Fed and on the Bank of England.
The Bank of England backdrop
UK inflation has been running above the Bank of England's own forecasts. September CPI was 3.5%, 40 basis points above the Bank's projection, while the October flash PMI showed the strongest growth since February. Retail sales were softer, but analysts now see a November rate rise as increasingly nailed on.
That expectation has supported sterling during its October recovery. If the Budget is seen as adding to inflation, the case for a November hike gets stronger; if it tightens policy more than expected, markets may question how far the Bank needs to go. Our BoE rate decision explainer covers how the decision and the Monetary Policy Report are usually read, and UK CPI explains why the inflation release moves the pound.
The dollar side of the trade
Cable is a two currency trade, and the dollar half has its own event later on Wednesday. US policymakers are widely forecast to leave the funds rate range at 3.75% to 4.00% after September's quarter point rise, with 94 of 100 economists in a Reuters survey looking for no change. Traders will look past the headline to the dissents and to any hint of another increase in December.
In practice, a sterling move built on the Chancellor's speech can be erased within hours if the US message is firmer than hoped, or extended if it is softer. That is why a pound idea opened in the morning deserves a second look before the evening. Our guide to central bank rate decisions covers why the tone of a statement often outweighs the decision.
How far GBP/USD moves in a day
GBP/USD has been the more volatile of the two major dollar pairs this year. The chart below compares the average daily high to low range of GBP/USD and EUR/USD by month.

Cable has swung further than the euro in every single month this year. Its typical session spanned anything from about 49 pips in August to about 102 in March, and October has averaged close to 69. On a close to close basis, half of all 2026 sessions moved 37 pips or less, while the busiest tenth moved 94 or more.
Interestingly, the end of the week has been the liveliest: Friday sessions averaged around 83 pips, compared with 69 to 71 from Monday to Thursday. A Wednesday packed with fiscal and Fed news may break that habit, but the point stands that a 25 pip stop on sterling can sit well inside an unremarkable day.
Sizing cable trades from a sterling account
Cable is quoted in dollars, so profit and loss arrives in dollars and is converted back into pounds by your broker. With the rate near 1.3375, every 10 dollar pip on a full 100,000 pound contract converts to roughly £7.48, and a mini lot of 0.1 is close to 75p a pip.
Work backwards from the loss you can accept. If £75 is your limit and the invalidation point is 40 pips away, a quarter lot fits. Push that invalidation out to 60 pips to give the Budget room, and the stake drops to around 0.17 lots for the same £75. The GBP/USD pip value calculator and the position size calculator do this sum at the current rate, which changes as cable itself moves.
Reading a cable ticket in a Budget week
A useful pound idea this week gives you more than a direction. Look for a precise entry, such as 1.3360, and an invalidation point placed beyond structure, for example above the 22 October peak near 1.3408 for a short or under the mid October lows for a long, rather than an arbitrary pip count. Profit levels should take account of round figures such as 1.3300 and 1.3400, where orders tend to cluster.
Just as important is guidance around the calendar: whether to keep the position through the Chancellor's statement, through the US decision, or through Thursday's growth and inflation figures. Follow up messages that move the stop to entry or close early matter more in a week like this than in a quiet one, and so does a published record of past trades. Forexuro tickets carry an entry, a stop loss and three targets with Telegram updates, and you can audit closed trades on our public results page and trade history. New to the layout? Managing trades through the Budget and the Fed
The awkward part of a double event day is that a position taken before lunch may face the Treasury's numbers in the afternoon and the Fed's words in the evening. Sensible options are banking part of the gain before the Chancellor speaks, trimming exposure ahead of the US announcement, and letting the first burst of volatility pass before committing to anything new.
Dealing costs on cable typically jump around big releases, and a fast market can fill a stop some way past its price. The slippage, gaps and weekend risk lesson explains the mechanics, while TP1, TP2 or TP3 shows how scaling out at the first target cushions a reversal.
Timing. UK clocks went back on 25 October, but US clocks do not change until 1 November. For this week only, New York is four hours behind London rather than five, as the week ahead previews noted. The Fed decision and Thursday's US data will therefore arrive an hour earlier than usual on UK time.
Check alert times before Wednesday and use the market sessions tool to see when the London and New York overlap falls. Our guide to London and New York sessions explains why that window usually brings the most volume in cable.
Seven questions before a pound trade this week
- Do I know, in UK time, when the Chancellor stands up and when the US decision is published?
- Is my stop wider than the 69 pip average October day, or likely to be hit by ordinary noise?
- How near is the entry to 1.3139, the year's low, or to the 1.3400 handle?
- What is the loss in pounds if the stop is hit, calculated rather than guessed?
- Will I hold through the speech, through the evening decision, or neither?
- Am I already short the dollar through euro or gold positions?
- Have I written down the reason for the trade so I can judge it on Saturday?

Frequently asked questions
What are GBP/USD signals?
GBP/USD signals are trade ideas on the pound against the US dollar, with a direction, an entry, a stop loss and targets. Forexuro signals have three targets, are delivered on Telegram with updates, and closed trades are listed on a public results page.
When is the UK Budget in October 2026?
The UK Autumn Budget is on Wednesday 28 October 2026, the same day as the Federal Reserve decision. US GDP and PCE inflation data follow on Thursday 29 October, according to the Newsquawk calendar.
Does the UK Budget move GBP/USD?
It can, mostly through gilt yields and expectations for Bank of England rates. Well trailed measures rarely move the pound much, but surprises on borrowing, the fiscal headroom or taxes can. This year the Fed decision on the same day adds a second source of movement.
How many pips does GBP/USD move in a day?
On our calculation from Yahoo Finance data, GBP/USD has averaged between about 49 and 102 pips a day by month in 2026, and about 69 pips in October to 23 October. That is wider than EUR/USD in every month.
How much do Forexuro VIP signals cost?
VIP signals are £99 a month or £549 for lifetime access. A £699 package adds both trading courses and the e-book to lifetime signals. Full details are on the plans page.
