Weekly, 7 November 2023 to 27 October 2026. Source: CFTC Commitments of Traders, futures only; DXY from the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rates via FRED, combined with the published ICE index formula. Hover or tap a week for its figures.
The ICE US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the dollar against six currencies, with the euro making up 57.6% of the weights, then the yen 13.6%, sterling 11.9%, Canadian dollar 9.1%, Swedish krona 4.2% and Swiss franc 3.6%. The futures contract is much smaller than the CME currency contracts, so many traders read dollar positioning as the mirror image of the euro, yen and pound figures instead. Federal Reserve decisions and US inflation and jobs data are the main drivers.
What extreme USD Index positioning meant in the past
We looked at every week since 24 December 2012 (the first week with 3 full years of history before it) and marked the start of each episode when the non-commercial COT index reached 90 or more, or 10 or less, after at least 4 weeks outside that zone. For each start we record where the COT index stood and what the US dollar index did over the next 13 weeks. This is a description of the past, not a forecast.
COT index 90 or more (extreme long): 6 episodes since 24 December 2012, lasting a median of 4 weeks. Thirteen weeks after the start, the COT index had a median of 80. The US dollar index rose over those 13 weeks in 5 of 6 cases, with a median change of +4.0%.
COT index 10 or less (extreme short): 8 episodes since 24 December 2012, lasting a median of 11 weeks. Thirteen weeks after the start, the COT index had a median of 11. The US dollar index rose over those 13 weeks in 5 of 8 cases, with a median change of +1.0%.
For comparison, across all 710 weeks in the same period, the US dollar index rose over the following 13 weeks 56% of the time, with a median change of +0.5%. With this few episodes, a difference of one or two cases changes the picture, so treat these numbers as context rather than an edge.
Over the last 3 years (156 weeks, Tuesday to Tuesday), the correlation between the weekly change in the non-commercial net position and the weekly change in the US dollar index was +0.03. There was little consistent link in the same week.
Most recent episodes first, up to 12. Change is the move in the US dollar index over the 13 weeks after the start date, from Federal Reserve H.10 rates. Ongoing means the episode had not ended by the latest report.

DXY is the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rate in New York on the report Tuesday (or the business day before), computed into the dollar index with the ICE formula; it can differ slightly from the ICE settlement. The Fed publishes these rates with about a week's delay, so the latest week can show n/a until the next update.
How to read the USD Index COT report
One contract is u.s. dollar index x $1000. The CFTC publishes the US Dollar Index futures (ICE Futures U.S.) figures in several reports. The Legacy report splits traders into non-commercial (mostly speculators such as funds), commercial (hedgers) and non-reportable (smaller traders below the reporting threshold). The Traders in Financial Futures report splits it into dealers (mostly banks), asset managers (pension funds, insurers and mutual funds) and leveraged funds (hedge funds and CTAs). A net position is longs minus shorts. Spread positions, held long and short at the same time, are left out of the net figure.
The COT index places this week's non-commercial net position inside its own range over the last 156 weeks: 0 is the most short (or least long) of the 3 years and 100 the most long. The percentile is the share of the other weeks in the window with a lower net position. We flag readings of 90 or more as extreme long and 10 or less as extreme short. Neither number says where the price will go: they show how crowded positioning is compared with its own history.
