Definition

Market order: A market order buys or sells immediately at the best available price.

Speed over price

A market order guarantees execution but not the price. In normal conditions on major pairs the fill is close to the quote. In fast markets or thin liquidity you can get slippage. Stop losses also become market orders once they are triggered.

When to use it

Market orders suit entries where getting in matters more than a few pips, for example when a signal says to enter now. For a precise entry level, use a pending order instead.

Worked example

A signal posts buy gold now at 4,031. By the time you click, the ask is 4,031.80 and you are filled there. Your stop distance is now 0.80 dollars smaller in reward and larger in risk than the signal's.

Common mistakes

  • Using market orders in the first seconds after high impact data.
  • Not checking the fill price against the plan.

If you follow trade signals, for example the gold signals or EUR/USD signals, understanding this term helps you size and manage each trade yourself. The free Forexuro Telegram channel shares daily market updates where these ideas are used in practice.
