Volatility: Volatility is how much and how fast price moves; higher volatility means larger swings in both directions.

Measuring volatility

Traders measure volatility with tools such as the average true range, the size of daily ranges or the standard deviation of returns. Options markets also price implied volatility. Volatility rises around scheduled releases such as NFP, central bank decisions and unexpected news.

Using volatility

Higher volatility needs wider stops and therefore smaller positions to keep the same risk. Gold and yen pairs often have larger pip ranges than EUR/GBP, which is why sizing from the stop distance matters more than a fixed lot.

Worked example

If gold's 14 day ATR is 60 dollars and EUR/GBP's is 40 pips, a stop of one ATR is very different in money terms. Position sizing converts both into the same risk.

Common mistakes

  • Using the same stop distance on every market.
  • Assuming quiet markets will stay quiet before big events.

If you follow trade signals, for example the gold signals or EUR/USD signals, understanding this term helps you size and manage each trade yourself. The free Forexuro Telegram channel shares daily market updates where these ideas are used in practice.
