EUR/USD pip size and contract specification

EUR/USD is the price of one euro in US dollars. The pair is often nicknamed "fiber". It is the most traded currency pair in the world, which is why spreads on it are usually among the tightest.

EUR/USD pip value by lot size

The pip value in the quote currency is fixed: pip size × units traded. One standard lot of 100,000 EUR × 0.0001 = 10 USD per pip. Because the quote currency is the dollar, the pip value for a USD account is fixed at $10 per standard lot whatever the price.

Worked example

A buy on EUR/USD at 1.1215 that closes at 1.1265 has moved 50 pips. On 0.10 lots that is 50 × 1.00 USD = 50.00 USD, or about $50.00 for a USD account at the reference rate.

What moves EUR/USD

The pair reflects policy at the European Central Bank (ECB) and the US Federal Reserve. Drivers that often move it include euro-area inflation and business surveys, and US inflation and jobs data. Activity is usually highest during the London session and the London and New York overlap; see the market hours clock for the times in your zone.

What a EUR/USD pip is worth on a UK account

EUR/USD is quoted in dollars, so a pip is always $10 per standard lot. A UK trader with a sterling account earns and loses those dollars and sees them converted into pounds, so the pound value of the same pip depends on GBP/USD, not on EUR/USD. The sum is $10 ÷ GBP/USD. At the reference GBP/USD rate of 1.3394 that gives about £7.47 per standard lot.

Because the conversion rate moves, the pound value drifts even when your EUR/USD trade is unchanged. With GBP/USD at 1.40 the same pip would be worth about £7.14; at 1.25 it would be worth £8.00. Brokers handle the conversion differently, some at the close of each trade and some continuously, so check how your platform shows profit and loss on dollar quoted pairs.

Sizing a EUR/USD position from a risk in pounds

Example only. The figures below are illustrative, use the reference rates dated 22 October 2026 and are not a trade or a result.

  1. Decide the most you are prepared to lose on the trade. On a £10,000 account, risking 1% is £100.
  2. Measure the stop distance in pips from your entry. Say the stop is 30 pips away.
  3. Multiply the stop by the pound value of a pip per lot: 30 × £7.47 = £224.10 per standard lot.
  4. Divide the risk by that figure: £100 ÷ £224.10 = 0.446 lots. Round down to 0.44 lots, which risks about £98.60 if the stop is filled at its level.

The position size calculator runs the same steps for any pair, and the lot size guide explains the rounding.

Spreads, news and the EUR/USD pip

Costs are counted in pips too. A spread of 1 pip on one standard lot costs $10, about £7.47 at the reference rate, the moment the trade opens, and the trade has to move that far before it breaks even. Around the ECB rate decision and US non-farm payrolls spreads can widen and price can jump past a stop, so the loss in pips can be larger than the distance you planned. The EUR/USD guide covers the pair's habits and the EUR/USD weekly forecast lists the week's levels and events.
