Central bank: A central bank sets a country's monetary policy, including the main interest rate, and is one of the biggest drivers of its currency.
What central banks do
Central banks such as the Federal Reserve, ECB, Bank of England and Bank of Japan set policy rates, manage liquidity and, in some cases, buy or sell assets. Most target inflation, often around 2%. Their decisions, statements, forecasts and press conferences are among the highest impact events on the economic calendar.
How to follow them
Markets react to surprises and to changes in guidance. A hold with a hawkish tone can move a currency as much as a hike. Read the statement, the vote split and any new projections, not just the headline rate.
Worked example
If the market expects the Bank of England to hold but the vote shows several members wanting a hike, sterling can rise even though the rate is unchanged.
Common mistakes
- Trading only the headline rate decision.
- Ignoring the press conference that follows.
