The table shows the spot price of gold converted into pounds sterling, per troy ounce, per gram and per kilogram. It is calculated from two numbers on the Forexuro rates feed: the gold price in US dollars per troy ounce and the pound to dollar exchange rate. Nothing is estimated or rounded until the final step, so the figures will match any calculator that uses the same inputs.

Gold is priced around the world in US dollars per troy ounce. To find the price in pounds, divide the dollar price by GBP/USD, or multiply it by the number of pounds one dollar buys. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, heavier than the everyday ounce of about 28.35 grams, so the price per gram is the ounce price divided by 31.1034768, and the price per kilogram is about 32.15 times the ounce price.
Gold in pounds per ounce = gold in dollars per ounce ÷ GBP/USD
An illustration with round numbers, not live prices: if gold is $4,000 an ounce and GBP/USD is 1.3333, gold costs £3,000 an ounce, or about £96.45 a gram.
Why gold in pounds moves differently from gold in dollars
Because the price in pounds depends on two markets, it can move even when the dollar price does not. If the pound weakens against the dollar, gold becomes more expensive in pounds; if the pound strengthens, gold becomes cheaper in pounds. On a day when gold rises in dollars and the pound falls, a UK buyer sees a bigger rise than a US buyer, and the reverse is also true.
That is why UK news such as Bank of England decisions, UK inflation figures or a Budget can change the sterling price of gold. See the Bank of England rate decision and UK CPI guides, the GBP/USD guide and the gold forecast this week.
Spot price, dealer prices and trading prices
The spot price is a wholesale reference for large amounts of gold. A bullion dealer selling coins or bars charges a premium over spot to cover making, storing and delivering the metal, and buys back below spot, so the price you pay for a coin or bar will be higher than the figures above. Smaller items usually carry higher premiums per gram.
Traders who speculate on gold through CFDs or spread bets do not buy metal at all. They trade XAU/USD, a price in dollars, and their profit or loss is converted into pounds if their account is in sterling. For what a move is worth in pounds, use the gold pip value calculator, which now includes a table in both currencies, and read spread betting vs CFDs for UK signal followers.
Points for UK buyers of physical gold
In the UK, investment gold that meets HMRC's definition is exempt from VAT, and gold coins that are UK legal tender, such as Britannias and Sovereigns, are not subject to Capital Gains Tax. The detailed rules are in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/21. This is general information, not tax advice; check the current rules or speak to an adviser before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
How is the gold price in pounds calculated?
It is the spot gold price in US dollars per troy ounce divided by the GBP/USD exchange rate. Both inputs come from the Forexuro rates feed.
How many grams are in a troy ounce?
A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. Gold is always quoted in troy ounces, which are heavier than the ordinary ounce of about 28.35 grams.

No. This is a spot reference price. Dealers sell coins and bars at a premium over spot and buy them back below it.
Why has gold in pounds moved when the dollar price has not?
The price in pounds also depends on GBP/USD. A weaker pound makes gold more expensive in pounds and a stronger pound makes it cheaper.
