How karat purity changes the gold price
A karat is one part in 24, so 24K is (in principle) pure gold and 18K is 18 parts gold to 6 parts other metals. Hallmarks express the same thing in parts per thousand. To price any purity, multiply the fine gold price per gram by its gold content.
| Karat | Gold content | Hallmark | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | 999 | Bars, coins, some Asian jewellery |
| 22K | 91.67% | 916 | Gold coins such as the Sovereign, Indian and Gulf jewellery |
| 21K | 87.5% | 875 | The everyday jewellery standard in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and much of the Gulf |
| 18K | 75% | 750 | Fine jewellery in Europe, Brazil and the Gulf |
| 14K | 58.5% | 585 | US and Russian jewellery |
Price per gram of a karat = spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768 × gold content × exchange rate
A worked example with round numbers, not live prices: with gold at $4,000 an ounce, a gram of fine gold is $128.60. A gram of 18K gold then contains 0.75 grams of gold, worth $96.45, and a gram of 22K contains 0.9167 grams, worth $117.89.
Troy ounce, gram, tola and kilo
- Troy ounce: 31.1034768 grams. Spot gold is always quoted per troy ounce, which is heavier than the ordinary ounce of 28.35 grams.
- Tola: 11.6638 grams (180 grains), so a 10 tola bar weighs 116.64 grams.
- Kilo: 1,000 grams, or 32.1507 troy ounces.
- 10 grams: the usual quoting unit in India.
Why shops charge more than the spot price
The spot price is a wholesale price for large amounts of fine gold. What a person pays is higher for three main reasons:
- Dealer premium. Coins and small bars are sold above spot to cover minting, insurance and margin, and bought back below it. The smaller the item, the higher the premium per gram.
- Tax. Many countries treat investment gold differently from jewellery. In the UK and the European Union, investment gold is exempt from VAT, while jewellery carries the standard rate (20% in the UK). Gulf states that charge VAT apply it to jewellery.
- Making charges. Jewellers add a charge for the work, often per gram, which can be a large share of the price of a light piece.
So use this page to judge a quote: subtract the karat value from the price per gram you are offered and you can see how much is premium, tax and workmanship.

What moves the gold price today
Gold is priced in dollars, so it reacts to US interest rate expectations, the dollar itself and demand for safe assets. The big scheduled moments are the Federal Reserve rate decision and US inflation (CPI). For the week ahead, read the gold forecast this week and the XAU/USD guide; traders who follow the market closely can see our gold signals and the gold pip value calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Why is 24K taken as 99.9% and not 100%?
Gold sold as 24K is refined to at least 999 parts per thousand, not to absolute purity, so this page values 24K at 99.9%. The spot price itself refers to fine gold of at least 99.5%, settled as 999.9 bars in practice.
How much is a tola of gold in grams?
A tola is 11.6638 grams, or 180 grains. A 10 tola bar, a common size in the Gulf, India and Pakistan, weighs 116.64 grams.
Why is my jeweller's price per gram higher than this page?
This page shows spot-based values. Jewellers add making charges and VAT where it applies, and dealers add a premium over spot, so the shop price per gram is always higher.
How often are these gold prices updated?
The page is recalculated every hour from our XAU/USD spot feed and checks the feed again every minute while it is open. Official exchange rates update once a working day; fixed pegs do not change.
Which exchange rate is used for each currency?
Major currencies use our live rates feed. Others use the ECB reference rate, the central bank's own official rate (Bank of Russia, Banco Central do Brasil, National Bank of Kazakhstan and others) or the official peg, as listed in the sources section.
