What matters this week

There is no SNB decision this week; the next quarterly assessment is in December. That leaves USD/CHF following the dollar: the FOMC on Wednesday, where a hold is expected, and US GDP and PCE inflation on Thursday. The ECB on Thursday matters through EUR/CHF, and oil and Middle East headlines can bring safe haven flows into the franc on risk-off days.

Scenarios

Upside case. A hawkish Fed message about December and firm US data could lift USD/CHF back to 0.8268, last week's high.

Downside case. Another round of risk aversion or a softer dollar after the Fed could push the pair below 0.8191, last week's low.

Either can happen, and the first reaction to a release often reverses. Read the USD/CHF guide for the longer term drivers.

Levels in focus

  • Resistance: 0.8268, last week's high (Bullquill)
  • Reference: 0.8241 close on 23 October (Bullquill)
  • Support: 0.8191, last week's low (Bullquill)

How USD/CHF usually trades

USD/CHF pairs the dollar with the Swiss franc, one of the currencies investors traditionally buy in times of stress, together with the yen and gold. When risk appetite falls, the franc can strengthen even if Swiss data is unremarkable. Switzerland's low inflation has kept Swiss interest rates low compared with most peers, so the gap with US rates is a steady driver of the pair.

The Swiss National Bank is an unusually active player. It has intervened in currency markets for long periods and, in January 2015, it removed the minimum exchange rate it had held against the euro, causing one of the largest single day moves in a major currency in recent decades. The SNB holds its scheduled monetary policy assessments once a quarter, so each meeting carries more weight than a decision at a central bank that meets eight times a year.

Because the euro and the franc are closely linked through trade, USD/CHF often moves as a near mirror image of EUR/USD. Holding long EUR/USD and long USD/CHF together can therefore cancel out much of the exposure, while holding the opposite combination can double it. The pair is most liquid during the European session and the overlap with New York.
